165 Mile Gas Pipeline Proposed to Cross Through
Georgia's Coastal
Counties
The Southern Natural Gas Company proposes to expand its existing
interstate natural gas pipeline system from a point near Port Wentworth,
Chatham County to a point interconnecting with Florida Gas
Transmission's system in Clay County Florida near Jacksonville.
The
proposed pipeline will cut a 95-foot swath down Georgia's coast,
bisecting forested wetlands, river systems, and private property. The
pipeline will take natural gas from the Elba Island facility near
Savannah to Jacksonville.
The project will impact the Georgia coast by
crossing all our major rivers and destroying wetlands. It will increase
potential for environmental degradation and create unnecessary exposure
to other risks for the purpose of providing energy to Florida.
The
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) held hearings in March to "scope" the issues to be addressed in their Environmental Impact
Assessment. Information on the project is available on their website at
www.cypresspipeline.com.
If you'd like to review the transcripts from the March scoping meetings, they
(along with a lot of other info) are available at the FERC website:
