Who Do You Call for Water Pollution Problems?

The Altamaha Riverkeeper encourages you to report any environmental problems that you observe. Your report creates a record and should initiate a rapid response so the agency in charge can determine and stop the cause of the problem, evaluate any damages and reduce any negative effects.

Here is a list of telephone numbers for reporting problems.

Call the Georgia Environmental Protection Department.

Regional EPD offices with problems such as:
  • Erosion & sedimentation
  • Stream buffer concerns
  • Trash dumping in a stream
  • Sewer over flows
  • Fuel, oil, or other toxic spills
  • Fish kills
  • Brunswick: 912-264-7284

Call the Atlanta EPD Emergency Response Team: 1-800-241-4113

For after hours emergencies, such as:
  • Sewage spills
  • Fuel, oil or toxic materials spills

For problems or complaints about Wetlands
Call the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: 1-800-449-2402

Wetland problems, such as
  • Filling
  • Ditching
  • Construction in the wetland
  • Dumping

For salt marsh complaints
Call the Coastal Resources Division in Brunswick.

Forestry complaints
Call the Georgia Forestry Commission in Macon. 1-800-Ga-TREES

Problems such as:
  • Anything that causes erosion and sedimentation
  • Road construction causing dirt to go into a steam
  • Removing the buffer. Cutting trees right up to a stream bank
Once you notify the proper agency, please advise the Altamaha Riverkeeper of the complaint so we can follow up. Also contact the Altamaha Riverkeeper if
  • you do not know whom to call or
  • you are not successful at getting help with your problem or
  • you are uncomfortable making a report
