On November 23, 2021, Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GAEPD) issued a Consent Order for Hyundai to pay a $3 million penalty for Georgia Water Quality Act violations that have occurred throughout the Golden Ray salvage. Public comments on the Consent Order are due by December 23, 2021.
Action is needed to let GAEPD know that Georgians want more than a fine paid to the State Treasury. Georgia’s coast deserves a full Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA). The Consent Order and Environmental Assessment & Response Plan do nothing to fully assess the damage done to the coast; it does not ensure that restoration of St Simons Sound and surroundings will be completed. The NRDA process was created for that specific purpose and should be fully utilized.
Please use our email template linked here to let GAEPD know how you have been impacted by the Golden Ray wreck and that more needs to be done to restore our coast.
