Job Listing: Communications Director
Altamaha Riverkeeper is a nonprofit 501©3 membership organization whose mission is to protect, defend and restore the Altamaha Watershed through education, advocacy, action and enforcement. Our goal is to keep our rivers and marshes clean for our communities’ use – swimmable, fishable, drinkable water.
Our watchdog responsibilities encompass the Ocmulgee, Oconee, Ohoopee and Altamaha Rivers as well as the marshes of the Golden Isles. We work within our communities to address pollution, poor development and other factors that affect water quality. Through our events, we also work to encourage Georgians and visitors to enjoy our beautiful waterways and coast.
Communications Director – This position will be responsible for communicating our message to our membership. This communications work will include grant-writing, press releases, membership communications, newsletters, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and more. Communications outreach work will include co-developing and leading events, membership drives, paddles, and more.
The position reports to the Riverkeeper Executive Director and works closely with a remote staff throughout the watershed. The ideal candidate will be someone who is outgoing, collaborative, self-directed and comfortable helping to lead a public organization that works closely with other environmental non-profits, lawyers, government officials, private corporations, grant-making foundations, private donors, our membership and the general public. Candidates with successful grant-writing experience, strong Microsoft Office skills, social media savvy, website management (WordPress) experience, and experience creating graphics, campaigns and communications materials using MailChimp and/or other similar applications will have an advantage.
Job requires work on some weekends and evenings, some travel, a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license. Position is located in Macon, GA.
- Work with Riverkeeper staff and board:
- Outreach and other Event organizing, advertising and managing
- Membership & Development annual plans
- Develop an annual grant plan
- Develop annual grant plan which includes reporting and schedules
- Prepare grant proposals and reports working with Riverkeeper and other key staff members as required
- Research and find new funding sources for special campaigns, projects and general support
- Grant tracking and proposal status
- Membership communications –
- Design, print, and distribute two hard-copy newsletters annually
- Design, print, and distribute State of the River report 2018
- Create “issue” messaging, call to actions for members and press releases
- Help maintain and update organization’s website and social media outlets
- Attend Board and Staff meetings as requested.
- Attend training conferences as time and budget allow
- Evaluate communications through 2017 and create a communications plan for 2018
- Engage in activities, events, and public meetings as requested.
- Continually enjoy learning about this massive river system
Desired characteristics, knowledge, experience and skills:
Altamaha Riverkeeper seeks an energetic, motivated individual prepared to become involved with their local community and across populations within the watershed that spans from Atlanta and Athens through Middle Georgia and to the coast. This position requires a self-starter who is willing to work alone as well as with people in calm times and under pressure.
Candidates for this position should live or be willing to relocate to the watershed, ideally Macon, GA. They should enjoy the outdoors and share in our organizational passion to protect our communities’ waterways for enjoyment and health for generations to come.
The Communications Director will be expected to work independently and to interact with co-workers, volunteers, donors, potential donors, press and communities in a professional manner.
The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, with a strong focus in communications. It is highly recommended that the applicant have 2 years work experience, ideally in communications/outreach or non-profit.
Knowledge and ability to effectively communicate and use digital media to build organizational awareness, grow membership and enhance fundraising is highly desirable.
